Winter 2008 News

The frosts have finally arrived in Rocky Creek. After a few at the end of April, we have not seen any until nearly the end of June, which is very different from our usual winters.

The grass is still green, but I think that will change soon if we have a few more freezing mornings. There is a bit of barley grass and rye grass growing after a little rain over the past few weeks. It has probably come a bit late for much of a clover germination. Hopefully, we will have some more rain through the winter to help the spring pastures.

We are coming up to the heifers calving. They should start at the beginning of July and will finish at the end of August. The cows start calving at the start of August so there will be some little calves about soon.

There are lots of emus and kangaroos and some wallabies to be seen around the hills of The Oaks. Although the mornings are cold, the days are brilliantly warm and clear. The little birds like wrens and finches seem to be about in abundance. I think they are a little confused as to time as year as there seems to be some nest building going on. Maybe they’re just preparing for the Spring!

Come and visit The Oaks this winter. The open fire at night in Sherwoods Cottage makes cold nights something to look forward to!
